I work for a Liability Insurance company in Los Angeles, and we get reports from Independent Adjusters where they go to the scene of accidents such as a slip/fall, and they do a report with photos, recorded claimant statements, etc…I’m just wondering what training or education is needed for doing this type of job???

Can I file an insurance claim?
Wednesday, November 18th, 2009I had a new patio cover installed on my screen room. It has leaked four times already (with every rain). The company has been out three times already to attempt to repair it with no avail. It is leaking bad. It floods the floor of my room and I have lost some stuff that I had to throw out from getting wet. Also, the compnay split my fascia upon installing and put caulking all over my brand new roof. Since, they can’t fix it, I did not know if I should call my insurance company to file a claim because I obviously need a new cover. I just paid $4800 for this one a little under three months ago. I have photos and was planning on sending a certified letter to the company demanding they fix it this time or I will contact the BBB and take legal action. I am just worried that this will make them mad and they won’t come out to fix it.
Renters Insurance?
Sunday, November 15th, 2009I’m sorry if this is in the wrong category however I was in need of some info.
I finally talked my boyfriend into looking at Rental insurance, One of his friends told him that it helps to have photo documentation of anything of value that can be replaced is this true? Also if it is true how detailed do the pictures have to be?
We don’t have a video camera at our disposal so what I am gathering is I need to take detailed pictures of everything,Include serial numbers from game consoles and such, And make a list of everything, We own over 200 movies and games, We were worries because we’re aware the owner isn’t liable for our belongings and the apt has bad wiring,We’re moving after we get money saved but we want the insurance for security,Is there anything that it doesn’t cover material wise? We have allot of collectible figures and posters would they be covered as well?
Insurance for Temporary Small Business?
Saturday, November 14th, 2009Two college friends and I are starting up a small Home Inventory and Computer Maintenance business for the summer. We would be taking digital photos and videos of people’s houses and/or working with their computers. To protect ourselves we are looking at liability insurance. Unless things change, we don’t intend to continue the business after the summer because of college. Does that change what is available to us? Does anyone have any recommendations for places to look (based in Purcellville Virginia)? And does anyone know what kind of premiums we should be expecting?
Thank you,

My thoughts on cell phone insurance: Do you agree?
Friday, November 13th, 2009I am a customer of Sprint. I have a Sprint cell phone. Recently, I walked into one of the Sprint stores asking a question regarding my phone that had broken. I was informed that I do not have insurance, and therefore I need to buy a new one. Here is an opinion of mine that I would like to share about cell phone insurance plans. I had insurance through Sprint that I chose to end in August of 2009. I had been paying for the insurance for about 15 months before I cancelled it, and here is why I chose to do so. I had not used that insurance for the entire time that I had paid for it. At month 15, I needed to replace the phone that I had because it was having a problem. I walked into the store and asked them what I could do, given that I had insurance. They confirmed I
had insurance and told me that I would be able to get a replacement, refurbished phone for $100, for a smart phone. I was confused by this and unhappy as well. As the terms of the insurance state, this is procedure.
What I would like to suggest to Sprint, and other phone companies with similar insurance plans, is some changes for this insurance.
First, please do not instruct employees that sell this plan to compare it to any other type of insurance in any way, shape, or form ( car, health, etc.). It in no way resembles any of these. I have spoken to numerous employees of Sprint that have made these comparisons, and to me, this comparison demonstrates such a lack of respect to the customers who pay these other insurance bills. Also, it shows a lack of support and caring for customers and their intelligence. Instead, cell phone insurance should be sold and identified as exactly that, insurance for a phone. If my $ 20,000 car hits another $ 20,000 car, we have a problem. However, if the cell phone that I probably paid around $ 200 for a year and a half ago, falls and hits the ground, we do not have a problem. Get it?
Second, You can have all the fine print that you want and need in regards to the insurance plan. However, please make a single page with bullet points stating what the customer really needs to read. For example, please have every employee that sells this plan know and be able to tell a customer that: the insurance only covers certain conditions ( other conditions such as a broken or cracked phone, will need to be replaced by the customer); when the phone is being repaired, things such as photos, etc. saved on the phone will be erased, so that needs to be saved elsewhere; a broken phone or phone accessory ( yes, this includes the earpieces) will be replaced by a used/ refurbished phone or accessory, and with a fee paid by the customer. In my case, with a smart phone, the fee was about $ 100; etc.
Third, there should be a way for a customer to use some of the insurance fee that they paid in the case of replacing the phone. A portion of the insurance that is paid each month, if not used after a certain amount of time, should be something the customer could tap into. For example, in my case, I had been paying insurance on my phone for 15 months. I should be able to use a percentage of that total I paid to offset the cost of a new phone or offset the fee for the refurbished one. What I pay for insurance should strictly go toward that. As it in no way resembles health or car insurance, I am not paying for piece of mind, I was paying because I thought that if something happened to my phone, I could replace it with less mess than I would have without a plan. Such was not the case, as I learned and subsequently cancelled the insurance.
Fourth, these are some miscellaneous revisions that I suggest be made. If a customer needs to replace a cell phone with an insurance plan, they should not have to make a claim through a separate company. Someone should be able to contact Sprint, with that one call, many transfers, and hour they normally spend with Sprint on the phone, to accomplish this claim. Very few customers have this kind of time, and even fewer appreciate it. Customers should be given the option to go into a store and get a refurbished phone from the back, no haggling. If it is not in stock, they can have it shipped to the store with no s/h fee or to their home for a very small s/h fee. If the price for a plan or a phone or whatever has risen for Sprint in the past year, that increase should be reflected in the line item of the general bill. Cell phone insurance should be considered strictly as such. It should not be used disingenuously. If it is for customers and their cell phones, then let certain practices of the insurance easily reflect this, not confuse the customer.
Believe me, I understand that gone are the days in which customer service meant anything for the customer. But, is it too much to ask for simple, seemingly obvious pieces of customer service to still exist? I understand that it is difficult for employees to deal with irate customers, or ones that tell

Public Insurance Adjuster fees?
Thursday, November 12th, 2009After Hurricane Ike, we hired a public insurance adjuster after the insurance company gave us a check for our 1st claim that wasn’t sufficient to repair the damage to our house. The adjuster was able to get an additional $8,000. She told use her 10% fee comes from the total amount, not the $8,000. The wording of the contract is ambiguous, but we thought we were only responsible for the $8,000.
Also, she sent someone to appraise the property to provide an estimate to our insurance company. Today, she told us he charged her $1500 which we are also responsible for. We had TWO independent appraisers write estimates for us for our insurance company and they didn’t charge us anything. In fact, one of them used the same software as our insurance company and was 25 pages with photos of the damage. The adjuster requested those estimates prior to sending out her own appraiser. There is very little difference between the two estimates. He added some minor damage we had to our fence and some other very minor damage. I know the reason why we got the addtitional money is because we had an advocate not the new estimate. The insurance company only gave use roughly 2/3 of our original claim from the first two estimates. So basically, our insurance company just paid us what was in the dollar value in the original estimate and about $1,000 more.
Here’s my question. Does the adjuster’s fee come from the total or just the additional amount and how much does it usually cost for an estimate? After arguing with her for about 15 minutes she said she’ll see if she can get him to settle for half. This whole situation is a little suspect to me.
We live in Texas if the state makes a difference with the fees.
Thanks!
The independent appraisers where not hired by our insurance company. They were recommeded to us from a neighbor and a co-worker. These appraisers did, however, work for the general contractors who were placing bids to repair our house. We never received a bill and have yet employed either since we were still fighting w/ the insurance company.
