Also, will I need any type of insurance? I’ll be going from location to location and setting up at pet stores, groomers and dog sitting locations. Very similar to the photos for kids you would get at at department stores.

If it were me I would research the market a bit. Going into my research with the goal of learning what supply and demand there is for my service in and around my location. I would get the pricing info for any competitors and research why they charge what they charge. If there is not local competition then find the information from the nearest market where there is and try and use that information to point you in the right direction. I don’t know about insurance. Technically you want some sort of liability insurance but the best protection is to form a contract. There might be some things you want to disclose to the customer about the flashes from the camera and how you are not responsible if the flash is alleged to damage the pets eyes, etc. Check with your county or city to find out if any licensing is required as well. Good luck and great idea by the way!
Your pricing is really up to you, I own a photography business as well. You need to scope out your competition and normally place your prices below them to gain business.
As far as insurance goes, if you don’t want to carry insurance and I am assuming your speaking of liability you can always create a waver form basically stating your not responsible for anything that happens. Hope this helps.
What you need is a Hold Harmless agreement. I can send you a sample agreement but I’m not an Lawyer so you would still need to seek out our own legal adviser.
What I can do is show you how to get all the business you can handle. See and if you want to network with a fellow pet photographer.
